Sustain Your Sight with Proper Nutrition

Whether you’re looking to improve your general health or target your eyes specifically, you can’t go wrong with proper nutrition.

Adding vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals to your diet can help keep you healthy. As you age, eating the right foods is especially important to help protect your vision.

There are many supplements on the market, some directed specifically at ocular health. You can also go to the grocery store and look for fresh, health-boosting foods. Talk with your optometrist if you’re looking to improve your dietary routine to help your vision.

Antioxidants

Antioxidant-rich foods can help decrease your risk of cataracts. Antioxidants help to delay oxidation, the process that causes cell death. In terms of cataracts, oxidation can cause changes to fats and proteins in the eye’s lens, leading to its clouding and hardening.

Foods rich in antioxidants include:

  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Artichokes
  • Kale
  • Raspberries
  • Goji berries
  • Spinach
  • Beets

Your body can’t produce omega-3 fatty acids on its own, so you need to supplement it with your diet. This family of fatty acids has many benefits for your entire body, but specifically your eyes.

Omega-3 fatty acids help stave off age-related macular degeneration. They may also provide relief for dry eye disease.

Foods full of omega-3 fatty acids include:

  • Fish
  • Walnuts
  • Flaxseed
  • Chia Seeds

If you’re concerned about cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, or your visual acuity, you may want to add Vitamin C to your diet.

Vitamin C is readily available in the following foods:

  • Grapefruits
  • Oranges
  • Tomatoes
  • Green Peppers

Always Consult a Professional

It’s important to discuss your supplements with a medical professional. Consult our team at Los Angeles EyeCare Optometry Group before adding large doses of new supplements to your routine. Please book your appointment today.
