Don’t Let Diabetes Harm Your Eyesight

Diabetes can impact the eyes in many ways.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy impacts the vital, light-sensitive cells in the retina. These cells are responsible for processing focused light into a picture interpreted by the brain.

This disease causes damage to the tiny blood vessels located in the retina. If they bulge or burst, they can leak blood and fluid into the eye.

The longer you have diabetes, the more at risk you are for diabetic retinopathy.

Those with severe diabetic retinopathy might experience swelling and fluid build-up in the macula. This is called diabetic macular edema. The macula is responsible for your central vision, so diabetic macular edema can inhibit your ability to read, drive, or recognize faces.

Both diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema cause severe vision loss. These conditions must be detected and treated in their early stages to minimize irreversible damage.

We’re Invested in Your Care

Los Angeles EyeCare Optometry Group has invested in the latest technology to diagnose and treat our patients.

We have a fundus camera to take full-color photographs of the inside back surface of the eye (the fundus). From here, we can look at many structures of your eye to check for signs of disease. We might examine your macula, retina, retinal vascular system, and optic disc.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) gives us a cross-section image of your retina. We look at its layers and take measurements to help diagnose diabetic eye diseases.

We’ve also invested in optomap imaging, which takes an ultra-widefield picture of your retina. We can look at the blood vessels in the retina to check for any signs of bulging or leaking.

The OCTOPUS visual field testing device allows us to test your peripheral vision and look for any changes that might indicate diabetic retinopathy.

Your eyes may be dilated during your exam to help us get the clearest possible picture of your eye.

Book Your Diabetic Eye Exam

People with diabetes are at double the risk for glaucoma and cataracts. The American Optometric Association recommends that those with diabetes have an annual comprehensive eye exam. Depending on your condition, we may want to see you more frequently.

Managing your diabetes means looking after your eyesight too! Book an appointment for your diabetic eye exam today.
